USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 6–9
Native Range: Western China
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile, slightly alkaline to neutral
Light: Full sun
Height in the Garden: 4–10', smaller with pruning or in bonsai
Size: ~4" square pot
Attributes: Deciduous shrub with small, pinnate leaves and beautiful blue to violet pea-like flowers in late spring to early summer. Attractive seed pods follow blooms. Fine-textured foliage and delicate branching.
Notes: A unique flowering legume ideal for bonsai or small gardens. Tolerates pruning and dry conditions. Leaflets are small and reduce well, making it great for fine-scale work. Rare in cultivation and striking when in bloom. Has tiny leaves, nice flowers and attractive fruits. Very uncommon for use as bonsai in North America, but I have seen them as such in Japan.
Uses: Bonsai, flowering shrub, xeriscape, pollinator-friendly garden plant.
