- USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 6 to 11.
- Native Range: Japan
- Soil: Moist, well drained, slightly acidic.
- Light: Full sun
- Height in the Garden: Up to 20', amazingly
- Attributes: Beautiful, peeling, brown bark. Light pink, fragrant, single flowers with yellow stamens that are loved by pollinators in mid spring. Foliage is pinnate with numerous, small leaflets. A wild species native to Japan that grows well in cultivation. Prickly stems and unusual prickly hips/fruits.
- Notes: One of a small number of rose species that is suitable for bonsai; I have seen it as such in Kokufu-Ten books as well as on the interwebs. I am very proud to be offering this species, and it has me to develop an appreciation for species roses as well as some antique varieties. I have one in my garden that has grown exceptionally well and seems like it is on its way to becoming a small tree to serve as a shade provider for my little shade perennials. I may try to field grow some for bonsai in the future.
- Uses: Collectors plant, Bonsai, Small, flowering garden tree, flowering accent plant. May be maintained as a shrub in the garden. I tend to prefer a jungly, wild gardens, so I am going to allow mine to attain full size.
