  • USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 6
  • Native Range: Southeast Europe to Western Asia.
  • Soil: Average soil conditions and neutral pH. No water logged soils.
  • Light: Full sun.
  • Height in the Garden: Up to 75' over a long period of time.
  • Attributes: Q. ithaburensis is a medium sized tree with winter deciduous foliage and is drought tolerant once well established. Some individuals may hold their foliage through winter, then rapidly shed and replace them in spring. My plants seem to be mostly winter deciduous. The foliage is smallish, glaucus, and  sclerophyllous, so it's a bit surprising that is is deciduous; go figure. This is an excellent species for places with a Mediterranean climate; it is highly tolerant of heat and dry summers. The bark can become corky with time, though the mature specimens I have seen in person have fairly smooth bark.
  • Notes: Q. ithaburensis is highly sought after at the moment by bonsai maniacs like myself. These trees are the real deal; being sourced from Israeli stock. This species is deeply connected with human history, being from the cradle of humanity; a place where much has and continues to happen.....
  • Uses: Bonsai, collector's tree, specimen tree.
