  • USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 7
  • Native Range: Southeast Europe, Atlas mountains of North Africa.
  • Soil: Average soil conditions and neutral pH. No water logged soils.
  • Light: Full sun.
  • Height in the Garden: Up to 60'-ish.
  • Attributes: Q. faginea is another sclerophyllous, deciduous oak from the Mediterranean region of Southwestern Europe and North Africa. It develops rough, corky bark over time and maintains small foliage.
  • Notes: Q. faginea makes a fantastic bonsai as evidenced by Mauro Stemberger, who has access to fantastic European yamadori; check out his Youtube. There are other stupendous examples of this species as bonsai in Europe that can be found on the interwebs. Q. faginea is also a choice oak species for California gardens and landscapes, or anywhere there is a Mediterranean-ish climate pattern such as: Oregon, Washington, and Southwest U.S. It does seem to be widely adaptable climate-wise. Will be fairly drought tolerant in the garden. My plants seem to be of the broteroi variety given their slightly lobed foliage.
  • Uses: Bonsai, collector's tree, specimen tree.
