- Attributes: Broadleaf evergreen, lustrous foliage. Abundant, light purple or maroon, highly fragrant flowers in mid spring. Dark gray, smooth bark.
- Notes: M. figo 'Port Wine' is an astounding garden plant and bonsai candidate. The lustrous, medium to small foliage totally pushes my buttons and has a slightly tropical look to it that fits in well in temperate gardens. The flowers are in scale with the foliage; they're not huge, but are quite visible when present and have a massive olfactory impact. Their sweet, banana scent wafts far and wide throughout the garden and neighborhood.
