Native Range: Japan, Korea, parts of China and Russia
Soil: Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral
Light: Full sun to part shade
Height in the Garden: 20–40', much smaller in bonsai
Size: ~4" square pot
Attributes: Delicate, pinnate leaves with excellent orange to scarlet fall color. Clusters of small white flowers in spring followed by bright orange-red berries in late summer to fall. Smooth gray bark.
Notes: A graceful, underused species in bonsai with small leaves and fine branching. Berry clusters add seasonal interest. Responds well to pruning and wiring. Attracts birds and pollinators.
