  • USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 5–9
  • Native Range: Himalayas, China, Japan, Korea
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained, rich in organic matter; prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH
  • Light: Partial shade to full sun (best flowering in morning sun with afternoon shade)
  • Height in the Garden: Up to 30–40 ft (with support)
  • Attributes: Deciduous woody vine with heart-shaped, dark green foliage. Large, showy clusters of fragrant, white lacecap flowers bloom in late spring to early summer. Exfoliating cinnamon-brown bark adds winter interest.
Notes: Self-clinging vine that climbs by aerial rootlets; ideal for walls, fences, tree trunks, or arbors. Slow to establish, but vigorous once rooted. Can also be grown as a groundcover on slopes or woodland edges. Prune lightly after flowering if needed; minimal maintenance required once mature. Makes an unusual, beautiful bonsai. I have seen them in Japan.
