  • Chaenomeles speciosa 'Contorta Red'
  • USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 4
  • Native Range: East and Southeast Asia.
  • Soil: Consistently moist, not soggy. Neutral pH.
  • Light: Full sun to light shade.
  • Height in the Garden: Up to 2'
  • Attributes: Broadleaf, deciduous, large shrub that is fantastic in the landscape and for bonsai culture. Foliage is oblong, dense and autumn deciduous. This floriferous shrub makes a large, aromatic fruits that are edible once cooked. The flowers are pink. The contorted red variety is smaller in stature than the white, but is just as easy to grow and easily forms a trunk with a swollen base over time.
  • Notes: I love growing contorted quince because they are so vigorous; they quickly form a thick trunk base and can easily maintain any trunk that you have selected to keep. Just keep after the root suckers to prevent them from overtaking the main parts of the plant. The stems are naturally contorted and mostly only need thinning and pruning to silhouette.
  • Uses: Bonsai, small specimen shrub.
  • Size: 4" pot. 6" to 10" tall. The ceramic pots are for display only. The plant will arrive in an Anderson band pot.
