- Chaenomeles japonica, 'Hime' Not Chojubai.
- USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 4
- Native Range: East and Southeast Asia.
- Soil: Consistently moist, not soggy. Neutral pH.
- Light: Full sun to light shade.
- Height in the Garden: Up to 3'
- Attributes: Broadleaf, deciduous, large shrub that is fantastic in the landscape and for bonsai culture. Foliage is oblong, dense and autumn deciduous. This floriferous shrub makes a large, aromatic fruits that are edible once cooked. The flowers are crimson, and my favorite shade of red flower. They are superior to the "red" flowers of Chojubai in my opinion.
- Notes: I love growing 'Hime', because it is quite vigorous, has small scale leaves and internodes, it is floriferous and less disease prone than Chojubai..
- Uses: Bonsai, small specimen tree.
