- USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 4
- Native Range: Japan, Formosa.
- Soil: Consistently moist, low to mid pH, wide range of textures.
- Light: Full sun to light shade.
- Height in the Garden: Makes a large, evergreen tree.
- Attributes: Hinoki cypress is a large evergreen tree with scale like, ferny sprays of foliage. It has red-brown, vertically peeling bark, similar to that of Coast Redwood, Incense cedar and so forth. Hinoki Cypress is a sacred tree in its home land and has innumerable uses. It is long lived, up to 1000 years, like some of its other relatives in cupressaceae.
- Notes: This is the species, not one of the hundreds of cultivars. It is what nature and evolution have given us. As such it is faster growing and more vigorous. It makes a fantastic landscape tree and is also good for use in bonsai. I have seen it in the Kokufu-ten bonsai show in Japan.
- Uses: Landscape tree, Bonsai.
- Size: Comes in a 4" square, black nursery pot. Ornamental pot is for example only.
