- USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 4a
- Native Range: Japan.
- Soil: Consistently moist, not soggy. Neutral pH.
- Light: Full sun to light shade.
- Height in the Garden: Up to 30'
- Attributes: Broadleaf, deciduous, small tree that is fantastic in the landscape and for bonsai culture. Foliage lanceolate, highly corrugated and beautiful. It turns bright yellow in autumn.
- Notes: Japanese hornbeam is my favorite all hornbeam species. The foliage is gorgeous, the twigs are fine and ramify well and the species vigorous, easy to grow and thickens quickly. Wounds do close with high vigor and sealant. There is a myth, in my opinion, that this species will mysteriously loose branches. I have not had this experience at all. Trees are dynamic, so all are subject to change, but with proper care, good health and vigor this species retains branches just like any other.

Uses: Bonsai, small specimen tree.
