  • USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 6?
  • Native Range: Japan.
  • Soil: Moist, well drained, low pH.
  • Light: Full sun to light shade.
  • Height in the Garden: 10"?
  • Attributes: Extremely dwarfed azalea type Rhododendron with minute foliage, with the occasional sport. The 'sport' stems have slightly larger foliage, and may in fact be where flowers are borne. The plants are highly congested and consist of multitudinous basal stems. They gradually spread laterally.
  • Notes: I am unsure of the cultivar name and am not familiar with blind azalea beyond my experience with this clone. They do flower, but the interval is irregular. It may be 'Saotome', but I am not sure. I got the plant from a bonsai colleague, and bonsai people are often not good at keeping track of cultivar names. Makes me crazy!!!
  • Uses: Rock gardens, accent plants, rock plantings.
